What I Learned This Weekend ...

... that perhaps I jumped the gun on trying to decipher the BCS. Auburn, Texas and Cal all go down (the most shocking, at least to me, being Cal) and suddenly USC is in prime position to make the BCS title game.

... that Arkansas is a legit contender for the national title. The Razorbacks (behind Darren McFadden, who should join Troy Smith, Brady Quinn, Ray Rice and Steve Slaton for the Heisman ceremony) killed a good Tennessee team, and have a great shot to run the table and beat Florida in the SEC title game. I don't think I gave this team its due previously.

... that the reason I suck at picking NFL games (2-6 in the last two weeks) is that no one knows who's going to win anything. At this point in the season underdogs have a winning record, the Steelers 3-6 and the Saints are 6-3 (and the Steelers beat the Saints this weekend!), and the Jets and 49ers, picked to finish 31 and 32 this year, are a combined 9-9. Even the Colts' nine wins have come by an average of 6.7 points per game. Weird.

...that no one should read too much into the Bears' win over the Giants last night. The Bears are legit, but the Ginters were down five defensive starters. That's brutal, especially with Toomer and Petitgout down as well.

Comments:
Biggrille -- it probably does. ND wins any competition in poll voting over Arkansas, and beating USC in LA would go a long way toward making people forget about the lopsided loss against Michigan.

That said, if Ohio State-Michigan is close and Notre Dame ends up No. 2, expect people in Ann Arbor to go ballistic (and the people at Fox dance the jig, as do people in Columbus because the Buckeyes would kill the Irish).

Also keep in mind, ND's best win so far this season was Week 1, 14-10 over Ga. Tech.

Add this to the list of lessons learned:
Never discount the Bison. Bucknell soccer scored a 1-0 upset win over George Mason in round one of the NCAAs, moving on to face UVa on Wednesday. Here we go... go Bison go...

Wahoowah!!! Although Bucknell has become something of a surrogate school of mine thanks to the influence of my good friend Big Thunder (see my betting patterns during March Madness last year), I still bleed (or in the case of this football season, cry) orange and blue (that's Cavalier orange and blue, not Bison). My loyalty to my alma mater is fiercest when it comes to the beautiful game.

After a disappointing performance in the ACC tournament (4-3 semifinal loss to Wake Forest in PKs), the Cavs need a strong showing in the NCAAs to validate the hype surrounding this year's team - the team has consistently been ranked in the top 5 nationally all year.

With the win over George Mason, does that make Bucknell the George Mason of this tournament?
