A complete waste of time

For those of you who have a few minutes to spare on a Friday afternoon, a trivia challenge courtesy of my friend F. Scott Fezler:
Name the 12 current Division I-A head football coaches who were once head coaches in the NFL.

Comments:
Just guessing (no googling involved):

June Jones
Dennis Erickson
Bill Callahan
Pete Carroll
Steve Spurrier
Dave Wannstedt
Al Groh

Wow, I did a lot better than I thought.

Good work. Does Butch Davis count now that he's back with North Carolina?

Also, is John Mackovic coaching college anywhere right now?

The only ones I can think to add (without Internet assistance) are Chan Gailey and Bobby Ross. Man, tough question.

Just thought of one more -- I think Mike Riley is back in Idaho or something weird like that.

I was gonna ask the Butch Davis question. Oh, and I absolutely knew Chan Gailey and Bobby Ross. Shoot. And your Mike Riley note sounds right also...

I've gone to the net. My first 7 are correct. Your next two (Gailey and Ross) as well as Mike Riley are correct. Riley is in fact back at Oregon State. The coach that replaced him in Oregon State (and that was eventually replaced by him), Erickson, is at Idaho.

Mackovic is not head coach anywhere (most recent head coaching gig for him was Arizona in 2003).

So that gives us 10. I've found one more that I wouldn't get in a million years. Won't disclose right now. Still looking for #12. You could have given me his current college, and I wouldn't have gotten it, and you probably could have even given the NFL team he coached, and it would have taken quite awhile...

Here's an NFL factoid for you: Wade Phillips twice succeeded Dan Reeves as an NFL head coach - in Denver and in Atlanta. He was also twice succeeded by Jim Mora - in New Orleans (by Sr.) and in Atlanta (by Jr.)

And I officially can't find #12. Maybe Butch Davis counts...

I don't know what you have, but I think Rich Brooks would be No. 11, with the Rams and now at Kentucky. To be honest, at first blush I totally forgot he was with the Rams. No. 12 totally eludes me -- I'm gonna hit the net now and do some searching.

Yes, Brooks is who I was thinking of...

Buuds -- I'm heading home soon and this is killing me. Who's No. 12?

Sorry, I was away from my desk from 1 p.m. on... Howard Schnellenberger, head coach at Florida Atlantic, was (briefly) the head coach of the Baltimore Colts in the 1970s. That's a toughie.

Wow. Schnellenberger. I never would have gotten that one -- actually, I didn't realize Howard was still alive.
