Mets' One Hitters
I tried to post this as a comment to BBD's earlier post, but wasn't able to for some odd reason. I know that as the only Mets 'meater that is not on a honeymoon, it is my duty to keep up the Mets posts, but the Man is pummeling me right now. So here goes with some one hitters (in anticipation of OP's one hitter coming up tonight):
- I would have preferred Oliver to start tonight, but Perez is OK too. Just not Trachsel. Perez should have the shortest of short leashes, though.
- I was amazed at how lifeless the Mets were in game 5. They truly don't seem to care. So from that point of view, I think that Reyes is really a key. However, I think the bottom line is that Carlos & Carlos will lead the team to victory.
- 5 of the Mets 8 regulars are named Jose, Carlos, or Chavez. Steve Lyons would have a field day with this game.
- Let's make sure that tonight is at least a 4 run lead heading into the ninth inning. Maybe 5. Or 6. Let's just not keep it too close.
- Speaking of that, who does Taguchi have to service to get some playing time? What more must he do?
- Speaking of that, did you catch the phantom strike call by the home plate ump with 2 strikes during the Taguchi at bat? He was 3/4 of the way to calling a strike and ending the game. Then, Taguchi strokes a double (maybe if he stroked people more, he'd get playing time). If the Mets had lost that game, the ump would be in witness protection today.
- Suppan home ERA: 3.18. Suppan road ERA: 5.36.
- Everyone is making a huge deal out of Maine outpitching Carpenter. Newsflash: Maine's home ERA is more than a run less than Carpenter's road ERA. Yes, he's a rookie, but Maine is a considerably better than average pitcher. He's got what McCarver would call (over and over again) a "live fastball." Plus, in his game 2 loss, he really didn't get hit hard. He just gave up too many walks. This time, he stayed in the strike zone and performed well.
- In game 5, there was a situation (I may be remembering slightly wrong, but it was basically this) where Encarnacion was up with runners on first and second and no outs, tie game. They tried to bunt him and he fouled two off. I turned to the guy I was watching with and guaranteed him that Encarnacion would get a hit. Its just one of those playoff situations that always happens. Sure enough, it came true. Well, tonight, a similar situation might come up. The Mets are passing over Trachsel to start a guy who is 10 games under .500 on 3 days rest. You know Randolph will be willing to yank a pitcher at the first sign of trouble. Doesn't this seem like one of those games where, despite being passed over, Trachsel will be called upon at some point to pitch? Call me crazy, but its the classic playoff drama scenario. I hope it doesn't come true, b/c I think the Mets can and should just blow the Cards out of the water. But if it happens, you heard it here first. And if it doesn't, you didn't hear it anywhere.

Speaking of McCarver, if I had a nickle for every time he called a change-up or curveball a fastball, I'd be a rich man. Now, we all know what BBD says about "if I had a 12 inch !$#?, I'd be a porn star", but I don't understand how Harold Reynolds can be fired by ESPN, Steve Lyons be fired by Fox, but Tim McCarver can still be announcing baseball games on Fox.
I can't look at any sports websites today. I don't know what I'm going to do all day at work but this is miserable. I wish I were EJ - maybe he didn't have to live through that eff-ing 9th.
Byron, for the record, the 12-inch line is Top-Shelf Tommy C's, not mine. And you're right -- McCarver hasn't said anything worth listening to since telling Deion Sanders he was a "real man."
