A different kind of ouch

While scanning the scoreboard Sunday, I found myself watching Art Shell's postgame press conference, in which he said the Raiders had "stabbed ourselves in the foot" on offense. The Rog-like malaprop was appropriate, I think, given the state of affairs in Oakland. Shooting yourself in the foot implies that it was accidental -- one envisions a cartoon cowboy misfiring with the gun in his holster and hopping around, cussing and such. Stabbing one's foot would almost have to be intentional, given that your hand is rarely within range of your foot for an accidental slip of the knife. With six points in two weeks, stabbing themselves in the foot sounds like a pretty good synopsis of the Raiders' philosophy on offense.

Comments:
Nice. Perhaps instead of meaning to say they "shot themselves in the foot," he meant to say they "accidentally stepped on the blade of a very sharp knife, thereby cutting the bottom of our foot in a very painful manner." Admittedly, the latter cliche is somewhat less popular. At least in the parlance of our times...

Actually, upon reconsideration, Shell's quote is even funnier because there is no relevant cliche involving the word "stab."

When The Rog indignantly said "How do you sleep with yourself at night?" (which, incidentally, was one of my top 5 favorite Rog moments), at least that was a combination of 2 actual cliches, either of which would have been appropriate in that particular situation. I don't think Shell could have been using any variant of "stab in the back," so it is doubly entertaining.

Bed and breakfast in Idaho, Dude. Bed and breakfast in Idaho.

The best was after the "How do you sleep with yourself" part, when Rog noted that the ump was lucky no one killed him after the game because, after all, that would be sad because he's a human being and all.

Ahh, those were the sald days ...
